World Cup Predictions: Schedule & Prediction Market Picks - July 5

The best World Cup predictions for today likely involve a bit of fingernail biting, some teeth clenching, and a lot of anticipation as four teams will battle to fill two spots in the quarterfinal.

Brazil and Norway will take the pitch to start the day in a matchup between two free-flowing, high-scoring squads that are practically guaranteed to attack the game head-on. The second match will feature one of the top contenders, England, against one of three host countries, Mexico, live from Mexico City.

Saturday’s Round of 16 matchups did not disappoint. With another day of single-elimination action approaching, these are our top World Cup prediction market picks and predictions for today, July 5.

World Cup predictions

Brazil vs. Norway Prediction

Brazil scored in every game of the World Cup and was only held to one goal against Morocco, which is ranked seventh in FIFA’s world rankings. They have remarkable talent at nearly every position and one of the all-time great managers in Carlo Ancelotti making the decisions in the dugout. All that said, they don’t have a very industrious midfield and are prone to letting games become a ping-pong match with constant transitions for both sides.

Norway is led by prolific striker Erling Haaland, who scored five goals in three matches thus far. Its defense is suspect, having conceded eight goals in the tournament and at least one in every game, but it is willing to fight and suffer, as shown in its Round of 32 win against the Ivory Coast. Finding the ability to slow the game down and limit dangerous counter-attacks will be crucial for Norway, given that defense is its weakness.

Seeing Norway advance would be a lot of fun, but Brazil can create chances with the best teams in the world. Titles and cup championships are won in defense, and the Norwegians simply don’t have enough to go on sustained runs in a competition such as the World Cup.

Mexico vs. England Prediction

It wasn’t too long ago that Russia, which was nowhere near a world power in the sport of soccer, finished fourth in the 2018 World Cup that it hosted. Mexico managed a perfect four wins in four matches at the ongoing tournament and seems to be enjoying a similar push from its home crowd and the environment of tonight’s matchup in Mexico City, which is about 7,350 feet above sea level. Mexico lost the possession battle in three of four matches, but also created more expected goals in three of four.

England needed a pair of brilliant goals from Golden Boot contender Harry Kane to recover from an early hole against DR Congo in the Round of 32. The Three Lions have now won three and tied one game at the World Cup, although they look far too content letting their opponents dictate matchups and setting back in defense. Manager Thomas Tuchel is one of the best in the world in cup environments, and they have much more talent than Mexico, but they also underperformed expectations, whereas Mexico has exceeded them.

This is a battle between a lesser team playing well and a dominant team playing down to its opponents. Mexico’s excellent start to the tournament has mostly come against inferior opponents, and it will get a real test against a strong England squad. There’s quality in the English team that there isn’t in the Mexican side, which makes them the better pick.
