The Miami Heat are the outright leader in prediction markets to sign NBA free agent LeBron James after they “accidentally” posted a link to an introductory press conference on YouTube.
What would recently be played off as an understandable mistake is now under heavy speculation due to the rising popularity of platforms such as Kalshi and Polymarket, which allow consumers to win money by predicting the outcomes of future events. The Heat’s gaffe will prove inconsequential if James signs with his former team, but will raise even more questions if he does not.
Kalshi prediction markets swing after Heat’s error
Kalshi’s prediction markets generated nearly $210 million in trades related to James’ next team ahead of his 24th NBA campaign. The Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Golden State Warriors were all favored at different points, and the Philadelphia 76ers are still considered to be in the mix.
The Heat were the top option earlier this week, but not by much. Their 39% chance on Tuesday afternoon was just ahead of the Cavaliers’ 31%, and Cleveland had been as high as 59% on July 9.
On Tuesday evening, online users noticed the Heat had created and posted a YouTube live stream titled “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference,” scheduled for Jul 27. A team spokesperson later said the post was a mistake by the team’s social media department, which was preparing for the possibility of James’ signing.
Regardless, the damage had been done. The Heat soared 10 percentage points to 49% immediately after the incident was shared on social media, while the Cavaliers dropped to 26%. Probabilities from Kalshi’s prediction markets at the time of writing still have the Heat at 47% and the Cavaliers at 27%.
“We’re gonna find out in a few years that little things like this were leaked deliberately to generate action on polymarket, kalshi, and the betting apps,” online user @thetrillbillies wrote on X (Twitter). “Not even a veneer of integrity to anything anymore.”
That post has 54,000 favorites and has been seen at least 1.5 million times since it was posted on Wednesday morning.
Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kalshi
Although James did not play a direct part in the latest controversy, another Heat player is intimately familiar with prediction markets.
Giannis Antetokounmpo — who was traded to Miami by the Milwaukee Bucks earlier in the offseason — announced in February he had purchased a minority share of Kalshi. He has featured in advertisements and made references to Kalshi online ever since he revealed his part-ownership.
“Everyone is online,” his announcement post read. “The internet is full of opinions. I decided it was time to make some of my own. Today, I’m joining Kalshi as a shareholder.”
Against that backdrop, Antetokounmpo kept NBA fans guessing about what his future held. Trade talks had swirled for the past couple of seasons, and he had openly flirted with the idea of joining the Heat and the New York Knicks — all while continuing to appear in games for the Bucks.
Kalshi, true to its word, offered prediction markets related to Antetokounmpo's next team until he was traded. No foul play was reported, but many online users remain skeptical of the partnership.
The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take
This latest incident isn’t a full-fledged scandal like the Jontay Porter incident, in which the ex-Toronto Raptors player was banned for life for manipulating his performances at the request of known sports bettors. However, the delicate, real-time, reactive nature of prediction markets became apparent after what may have been a simple error. James signing with any team other than the Heat will almost inevitably prompt cries of unfairness.
