Kalshi Doubles Down on MLB With Five-Team Partnership

Kalshi is making another major push into professional sports, and this time it is going straight to the source.

The prediction market company announced Tuesday that it has signed exclusive, multi-year partnerships with five Major League Baseball teams: the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants.

The agreements will give Kalshi a presence across stadiums, social media, digital platforms, radio and various fan activations. The Dodgers deal will even include Kalshi branding throughout Dodger Stadium and naming rights for the Gold Glove Bar, along with activations in Centerfield Plaza.

This is a pretty significant step for Kalshi and prediction markets. The company is no longer simply trying to convince sports fans that prediction markets are another way to follow a game. They’re putting themselves right in the mix.

Sports Are Becoming Critical for Kalshi

Sports have quickly become the biggest growth engine for prediction markets. Kalshi says baseball trading volume has increased 36 times year over year, showing just how much interest there is in markets tied to America's pastime.

For Kalshi, these partnerships can help turn that existing interest into something much bigger. A fan walking into Fenway Park, Dodger Stadium or Oracle Park and seeing Kalshi branding is being introduced to the platform in a completely different way than someone simply seeing an advertisement online.

The company is essentially trying to make prediction markets feel like another part of being a sports fan. Prediction markets don’t have the same predatory connotation as a sportsbook even though they offer similar markets.

Red Sox Partnership

The Red Sox partnership is particularly interesting. Kalshi is now officially partnered with a Boston sports franchise while simultaneously fighting Massachusetts regulators and courts over whether it should be allowed to offer sports-related contracts in the state.

That is one of the more bizarre situations in the prediction market industry right now.

Massachusetts has argued that Kalshi is effectively offering unlicensed sports betting and should be subject to state gaming laws. Kalshi has taken the opposite position, arguing that its contracts are financial products under the jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and therefore cannot be regulated by states in the same manner as traditional sportsbooks.

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court appeared skeptical of Kalshi's argument during May's hearing. Justices questioned how the company's sports contracts are meaningfully different from what consumers would traditionally consider a bet, while Kalshi's attorney maintained that the issue falls under federal regulation.

Kalshi can put its brand inside Fenway Park, associate itself with one of the most recognizable teams in baseball and market itself to Red Sox fans, while the company continues to fight for the legal right to offer those same sports contracts to Massachusetts residents.

It’s a strange dynamic, but it also shows how seriously Kalshi is taking the sports market.

The company clearly believes sports will be central to the future of prediction markets. Signing five MLB teams at once, including two of the most recognizable franchises in baseball in the Dodgers and Red Sox, is not something a company does if it views sports as a side business.

The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take

Kalshi is trying to position itself as something different from a sportsbook, but it is increasingly competing for the same sports audience. People can place virtually the same trades as bets, making Kalshi interchangeable with FanDuel or DraftKings.

The legal questions surrounding the industry are far from settled, but Kalshi is clearly not waiting around for those answers.

It’s spending heavily on partnerships, building relationships with major sports franchises and putting its brand directly in front of millions of fans. This will build their audience even with legal decisions pending.
