Does Novig's 21+ Age Restriction Give it Leverage on Rivals?

Novig just differentiated itself in the increasingly competitive prediction market scene. The rising prediction market platform recently changed its site age restriction to 21, leaving behind big players like Kalshi and Polymarket, who have theirs set at 18.

The prediction market site had already technically had its age restriction set to 21, but an August 13th announcement clarified the minimum age would remain 21. The age restriction becoming more official coincides with a strong opening for the site, which broke first-week records amongst the top prediction markets.

Novig Age Restriction Moving Forward with Minimum at 21

The platform had technically already kept the minimum age for its users at 21, but an official August rollout confirmed a doubling down by the company.

The announcement is part of a broader company-wide policy upgrade, as Novig made official updates on identity verification, financial limits, cooling-off periods, self-exclusion, and more.

Part of their rulebook changes was the official placement of their age restriction, which goes directly against major prediction markets.

Why is Novig Drawing the Line at Age 21?

Novig’s decision to start off with a more restrictive age limit may be grounded in morals, or the company could have realized the upside in getting one step ahead of looming regulatory concerns.

At first glance, Novig is taking care of our youth whether it truly intends to or not. CEO Jacob Fortinsky made sure not to waste the illusion, as he told WIRED that the company viewed 18-year olds taking part in event contracts as concerning.

People at that age are just starting out in their adult lives, and investing money in prediction market contracts could hinder them financially, while even negatively influencing them from a behavioral perspective.

While Novig can hang their hat on doing their part to ensure more responsible wagering, the company also gets ahead of the regulatory battle. With ongoing legal and regulation concerns within the industry, the debate over 18 versus 21 is one less thing for Novig to worry about.

Pros & Cons of Novig’s 21+ Age Restriction

The big gain here is that Novig looks like they care about the average consumer, and that they are willingly sacrificing maximum profits to make sure they’re not part of the problem.

Creating problem gamblers isn’t really in Novig’s best interest. Advocating and enforcing 21+ age restrictions not only sets them apart, but puts the company in a stronger position with regulators.

Novig’s age restriction decision helps the company avoid negative press, while it also aids their plight to present prediction markets as legit financial investments, rather than regular betting.

Alternatively, Novig does wave off a ton of profit by dismissing a three-year gap of ready and willing bettors. Their competition can take a giant piece of the pie until regulatory changes demand they change their own age limits.

If their rivals aren’t eventually forced to join them at the 21+ age limit, it’s possible Novig loses a lot of ground without much upside to show for it.

The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take

Novig is making a calculated swap here; they’re assuming a 21+ official age limit pushes them to the top of the prediction market scene when it comes to responsible gaming. On top of that, they avoid negative PR and can also take the moral high road and sleep a bit easier at night.

Given the ongoing legal and regulatory debates, Novig’s approach isn’t just morally right, but potentially financially brilliant as well.

The downside, of course, is that we never get to a point where other major players like Kalshi and Polymarket have to raise their age limit. Novig could always bring theirs back down, but they would also run the risk of going back on their word.
