Election Prediction Markets Face New Restrictions for Midterms

With the 2026 midterms just around the corner, election officials are reportedly taking measured actions to protect the integrity of elections. The rise of popular prediction market platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket has prompted action, with officials warning some public workers affiliated with elections not to trade on said elections.

The news comes after several insider trading infractions have occurred at multiple platforms, with some even involving congressional candidates wagering on their own election results.

Election Officials Aim to Restrict Prediction Market Trading

The prediction market scene is booming, with all eyes on massive names like LeBron James joining Polymarket and Sydney Sweeney latching on with Novig. Election officials just hope to keep prediction market interest where it belongs, and away from the actual elections.

That has prompted election officials to restrict certain employees from trading on midterms contracts, as well as other election prediction markets. The goal is to protect the integrity of the elections, while the top prediction market sites should welcome any support to maintain fairness within their markets.

Prediction markets are centered on traders using information to determine whether something will happen or not. However, when someone’s job gives them access to data that not everyone else has, it can have legal and regulatory ramifications.

Election Prediction Market Insider Trading Could Become More Prominent

There have been numerous cases of prediction market insider trading already, and the reach of these types of offenses appears to be limitless.

Election workers are just the beginning. Government officials can have even more information on the state of elections, who is running, who might drop out, and the list goes on. This all sets up a difficult question, “When does someone know too much to allow them to participate in prediction market trading?”.

Ultimately, the conversation comes down to whether prediction market platforms will restrict certain event markets, or if officials attached to those markets will do it for them. With no signs of prediction market sites bailing on lucrative markets unless they’re forced to, it’s fallen on election officials to cut off individuals who may have access to privileged information.

What Employee Bans Could Mean for Prediction Markets

The good news is election officials are taking some responsibility here and setting guardrails for their employees. They are forbidding this activity, which should help cut down on insider trading cases.

There is a downside here, of course. First, something being disallowed doesn’t mean it won’t happen. If anything, it’s being publicly banned for election employees, so any infraction would ruffle industry feathers even more.

Secondly, removing election employees from these markets does two things: it can alter the makeup of the market and make it less accurate, and it also takes volume and added interest away from the industry.

All of this likely leads to one thing; regulation. If prediction markets won’t take it upon themselves to eliminate problem markets, it’s possible at some point they will be forced to.

The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take

Election prediction market trading is already happening, and it could get worse from here. However, with election officials being proactive with guidelines in place for their employees, it’s a positive step in protecting market integrity.

This is positive for prediction market sites for two reasons. First, election officials are doing some of the hard work for them and protecting election integrity. Secondly, keeping these event markets safe maintains interest in them from traders, and keeps volume flowing to these platforms.

The more prediction markets that users can tap into, the better for a surging industry. Making sure prediction market insider trading is more contained is understandably an extremely positive step in protecting it as well.
