Kalshi has moved forward with the launch of single-stock perpetual futures, declaring itself the first company to offer the product in the United States. The regulated SSPs allow traders to go long or short on individual stocks without actually owning full shares.
It’s been a massive hit in the early going, with Kalshi reported early trading volume north of $300 million. CFTC Chair Mike Selig only recently cleared single-stock perps, clearing the way for Kalshi to offer more than 50 Nasdaq and NYSE names for traders on their platform.
Stock Perpetual Futures Hit $300M for Kalshi
Kalshi’s bid to move beyond prediction markets was met with instant success, as it introduced single-stock perps and saw instant trading volume. Getting back $300 million in early trading was mildly surprising, but suggested the desire for these types of markets is strong.
The launch of perps on Kalshi included over 50 U.S. stocks and ETFs, allowing traders to get exposure to stock price movements without actively owning shares.
This is a triple whammy for Kalshi, as it generates loads of trading volume, expands the company’s reach beyond traditional markets, and also gives anyone interested in the stock market a truncated path toward activity.
Kalshi Brings Stock Perps to U.S. Traders
Prediction markets have slowly been trying to expand their reach and further prove themselves as legit financial institutions. This groundbreaking move does that and then some, as it gives Kalshi another avenue for profit, but also gives traders a unique product separate from traditional stocks.
Here’s what traders get access to:
- Ability to take long or short positions without fully investing in a stock
- Obtain contracts with no expiration date, eliminating traditional futures rollover requirements
- Access to 50+ real stocks
- All products are surveilled by the CFTC and SEC in joint oversight
Kalshi is legitimately bringing the stock market to non-traditional users and changing the game. This means a more accessible product versus complicated trading processes, while Kalshi traders increase their knowledge base and have a hand in serious trading at the same time.
$300M in Early Trading Sends Positive Signal
It was always fair to wonder how successful a move like this would be, as prediction markets were originally built on the back of political betting and sports event contracts.
Whole event contracts have pushed Kalshi and other platforms to where they are now (and surely will continue to aid expansion), adding stock perpetuals gives traders a product that really doesn’t have a shelf life.
Nobody has to wonder if Kalshi’s user base is interested in stock perps, though. The $300 million in reported early trading tells us all we need to know. Kalshi has brought the stock market to the people in a condensed, accessible, and easy-to-comprehend package, and traders are responding with serious interest.
The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take
Kalshi has exploded as the top prediction market site thanks to sports contracts and a clear edge over traditional gambling sites. However, its reach into finance and the stock market was always a clear goal. Execution and interest were the question marks.
So far, Kalshi has knocked it out of the park from an execution perspective, and the early trading volume (while admittedly self-reported by Kalshi) is an extremely positive sign.
This may tell us two very important things; Kalshi may be able to thrive even outside of regular event contracts and products like this also simultaneously distinguish prediction markets from regular gambling sites.
