$600M in Trades Raises Polymarket Wash Trading Concerns

Polymarket is facing public scrutiny following some suspicious trades. Researchers have revealed over $600 million was traded across Ethiopian and Romanian election markets, with trades going down despite the races ending.

The prediction market platform stated that it investigated the suspicious activity and blocked all of the accounts involved. Despite Polymarket’s swift response, this trading behavior has raised Polymarket wash trading concerns. This shines a brighter spotlight on the ongoing discussion involving transparency and regulation within the prediction market industry.

Researchers Find $600 Million in Suspicious Election Market Trades

Suspicious trading activity was first discovered in Ethiopia, where roughly $284 million was traded between a set amount of accounts. Thousands of trading loops were discovered, with most generating no clear gain or loss, and much of the trading coming after the election markets involved had officially ended.

Romania saw a similar situation unfold, where trading raged on despite a separate election market being cancelled. These patterns were consistent with wash trading, an action where traders continuously buy and sell to suggest more market activity than there actually is.

The combined $600 million is cause for alarm in regards to market integrity, but did not count as confirmed loss or profit.

Why Artificial Trade Volume Was Being Generated

The investigation as to why the trading volume spiked is ongoing, but one proposed theory is that involved participants may have been looking to increase trade activity ahead of crypto token distribution.

In this case, the traders may have been more focused on generating trade volume to boost their chance at rewards in the future, rather than capitalizing on a live market. This theory holds weight since the election markets involved were in fact closed, but traders were still able to place trades.

While none of this activity necessarily means Polymarket as a company did anything wrong, this type of activity does shine a light on the importance of separating legitimate trade volume from volume that may be artificially inflated.

Polymarket Issues Swift Response to Suspicious Trading

Shaun Bautista, Polymarket’s head of global intelligence and investigations, pushed back on the idea that the site allowed this activity to go unnoticed.

Instead, the company is said to have quickly identified the suspicious trading patterns, looked into the involved accounts, and blocked them from the platform.

In Polymarket’s opinion, the point isn’t that traders were able to abuse the system slightly or create artificial trade volume. Infractions and bad actors are things that will always be prevalent, no matter what type of guidelines and restrictions are in place.

Rather, Polymarket hangs their hat on their internal ability to detect fraudulent behavior, investigate it, and deal with it at a high level in a quick manner.

The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take

Polymarket identified this trade activity quickly and put the problem to bed, but that won’t quiet the noise coming from the outside; that these infractions happening at all are a red flag.

The Polymarket wash trading investigation is another reminder that no prediction market platform is immune to suspicious activity. However, it’s a reminder that they are equipped to identify and deal with it.

This is a glass half full situation. The fact that this can happen at this magnitude is disconcerting, and with prediction markets growing, the level of market manipulation may only expand right along with it.

Polymarket and other prediction market platforms clearly have an answer in way of detection, monitoring, flagging, investigating, and penalizing. However, the big ask not too long from now may be a demand for even stronger surveillance, clearer rules for all markets, and better guardrails to prevent instances like this from occurring.
