76ers Kalshi Deal Signals NBA's Embrace of Prediction Markets

The Philadelphia 76ers have officially become the first NBA team to join forces with the prediction market industry. The team recently agreed to a partnership with Kalshi, inching the NBA as a whole towards a full embrace of prediction markets.

Due to their longstanding partnerships with sportsbooks, the NBA has to this point remained on the fence in regards to prediction markets. However, with the league recently aligning with the CFTC and the 76ers’ new Kalshi partnership, the line is at a minimum beginning to blur.

76ers Become First NBA Team to Partner with Kalshi

The Philadelphia 76ers made history on October 30th, announcing the NBA’s first partnership between a team and Kalshi. This establishes Kalshi as Philadelphia’s official prediction market platform, and also opens the door to more NBA teams striking deals with sites like Kalshi.

The deal marks continued growth for Kalshi, which recently saw their company valuation balloon to $40B following a $1B round of funding.

While the deal is good news for fan engagement and promotional opportunities for Kalshi, it also potentially sets up a roadmap for other NBA franchises to hop aboard a budding prediction marker industry.

NBA Aligning with Prediction Markets During Expansion

The NBA as a whole was already inching toward some level of affiliation with prediction markets, as this news follows an even bigger announcement involving The Association and federal regulators.

The NBA recently signed off on the CFTC, officially approving a cooperative framework with market integrity, information sharing, and regulatory oversight in mind. With that move, the league also made Kalshi and Polymarket their main prediction market exchanges, giving both companies a clear path to NBA intellectual property, new marketing avenues, and league data.

There are whispers of WNBA involvement as well, with the women’s professional basketball league looking to explore prediction markets from a commercial perspective.

LeBron James & Giannis Kicked Things Off

The foundation for these moves was made months ago, when Giannis Antetokounmpo announced an individual partnership with Kalshi. Not long after, LeBron James teased a union with Polymarket, putting two of the biggest NBA stars at the forefront of a budding industry.

With two of the NBA’s top superstars in tow, the league eventually followed suit, and now individual franchises are signing on the dotted line.

None of this should come as a surprise when talking about optics, ambition, marketing, or growth. These have all been strong points for Kalshi, with legal and regulatory concerns being the only mild obstacles that previously rendered news like this surprising.

However, the NBA clearly isn’t concerned about ruffling the feathers of sportsbook partners, and/or didn’t want to pass up an opportunity to get in on the ground floor with Kalshi and Polymarket.

The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take

Prediction markets have been making a strong push to go beyond sports contracts, but deals with NBA players, teams, and the league itself suggest they still value sports-centric trading.

More importantly, landing big deals with massive leagues and iconic franchises figures to be a necessary stepping stone as Kalshi and Polymarket continue their expansion.

All of this is a good omen for the prediction market industry. Not only does it show that the hype train has plenty of substance and isn’t slowing down, but also that lingering regulatory concerns aren’t holding big sports decision-makers from striking impactful deals.
