Even though Polymarket and Kalshi have intensified their focus on sports, traders are still cashing in on various markets across the political spectrum. These markets can be very lucrative, as knowledgeable traders tend to capitalize by getting in early and identifying market shifts before they happen.
This week, the Republican gubernatorial primary in Florida created several big wins in the market. There were also some significant trades involving the negotiations between the United States and Iran after the two sides failed to extend their 60 day negotiation period.
Here, we will break down some of the largest political wins of the week on Polymarket.
Byron Donalds Wins in Florida
The Republican race for Florida governor has officially come to an end, with Rep. Byron Donalds emerging as the party’s nominee after a commanding primary victory.
Donalds, a Trump backed Republican, entered the race as the clear favorite and ultimately defeated Lt. Gov. Jay Collins and a crowded field of challengers.
Donalds’ victory sets up a November matchup with Democrat David Jolly, a former Republican congressman who switched parties.
The race will determine who replaces term limited Gov. Ron DeSantis, with Donalds now looking to keep Florida’s governor’s mansion in Republican hands. If elected, he would become Florida’s first Black governor.
This market drew plenty of action across prediction markets. On November 25 of last year, Donalds had a 52% chance of securing the nomination, and his likelihood of winning continued to rise throughout the year.
In the days leading up to the election, he had more than a 90% chance of securing the nomination. Polymarket trader Mysaria took a $189,264 position on Donalds to win, resulting in a payout of $260,855.
This was the largest political win of the week, but not by much. An unnamed trader turned a $184,122 position into a $251,085 payout.
The third largest win in the Republican race came from a trader using the name Trump2028. There was no denying this trader would be taking a position on Donalds, and the trade resulted in just over $40,000 in profit.
Many of these traders took the strategy of backing Donalds closer to the primary, when they had more information available and his chances of winning had increased significantly.
U.S. and Iran Negotiations Expire
The United States and Iran allowed a 60 day negotiation window to expire without reaching a broader agreement, and this became another popular market on Polymarket.
The deadline came from a June memorandum that was intended to give both sides time to negotiate an agreement aimed at ending the conflict.
President Donald Trump has rejected extending the framework, while Iranian officials have argued that the U.S. violated the agreement before the negotiations could produce meaningful progress.
The wins in this market were much smaller than those from Florida’s Republican primary. One trader had a $429,159 position that returned $461,374.
While this was a relatively small profit compared to the size of the trade, the trader was still able to turn a massive position into a positive return based on the available information.
There was also a $19,098 trade that paid out $42,083, resulting in a profit of nearly $23,000.
The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take
Prediction markets have consistently shown their diversity. There are plenty of excellent markets that span well beyond sports, and that is exactly what we saw over the past week.
The two biggest markets in the political space were the Republican primary in Florida and the negotiation talks between the United States and Iran.
Both were major storylines in the news, and prediction markets like Polymarket gave traders the opportunity to capitalize on their knowledge and understanding of each situation.
As more people become familiar with prediction markets, political and geopolitical events will continue to provide opportunities for traders. This week was another example of how getting ahead of a major storyline can result in significant profits.
