The first College Football Playoff rankings are here, and apparently Kalshi traders didn't get the memo. Miami is the committee's No. 1 team, but Georgia is the favorite to win the national championship on Kalshi. Notre Dame is another interesting case, sitting 11th in the rankings while traders give the Fighting Irish the second-best chance of winning it all.
If you're a college football fan, you probably already have a few complaints about the committee's rankings. That's nothing new. What makes this year interesting is that we can compare those rankings with what people are actually paying to trade on the outcomes. The differences are pretty hard to ignore.
Miami is No. 1, but Georgia is the Team to Beat
Miami hasn't lost a game, so it's easy to understand why the committee put the Hurricanes at No. 1. Kalshi traders also like Miami's chances of making the playoff, putting that probability at 90%. Winning the national championship is another story. Miami's title probability sits at just 10%, while second-ranked Georgia leads the market at 23%. The Bulldogs also have a 92% chance of making the playoff and a 39% chance of reaching the championship game.
Miami, meanwhile, has a 23% chance of reaching the title game. That's a pretty big gap between two teams separated by one spot in the rankings. We're not saying the committee got its top two teams wrong. But if you're trying to figure out which team is most likely to finish the season holding the trophy, traders clearly prefer Georgia.
Notre Dame Looks Nothing Like an 11th-Ranked Team
Notre Dame might be the most interesting team in this entire comparison. The committee has the Fighting Irish at No. 11, which puts them right on the edge of the current playoff picture. Kalshi traders aren't nearly as concerned. Notre Dame has an 81% chance of making the playoff, trailing only Georgia, Miami, and Indiana. That's a stronger outlook than several teams ranked ahead of the Irish, including Alabama, Texas, and Utah.
It gets even more interesting in the championship markets. Notre Dame has a 28% chance of reaching the national championship game and a 16% chance of winning it. Only Georgia ranks higher in either category. Think about that for a second. The committee has 10 teams ahead of Notre Dame, but traders believe only one team has a better chance of winning the national championship. The AP poll, which ranks Notre Dame fourth, is much closer to how Kalshi traders see the Irish.
Kentucky and BYU Aren't Getting Much Love
Now let's look at the other side. Kentucky and BYU both landed inside the committee's top 10, but traders seem much less convinced about their postseason chances. Kentucky is ranked sixth with a 7-1 record. That's an impressive position heading into November, yet its playoff probability on Kalshi is only 37%. BYU is in a similar spot. The Cougars are ranked ninth, also at 7-1, but have just a 34% chance of making the playoff.
Their championship prices aren't encouraging, either. Kentucky sits at one cent, while BYU is at two cents. Those numbers don't mean the teams haven't earned their rankings. They do suggest traders are looking ahead at what remains on the schedule and aren't particularly confident both teams will survive the race for playoff spots.
LSU and Boise State Make Things Interesting
The committee's top 12 might get most of the attention, but several teams outside that group have better playoff probabilities than you might expect. Here's where some of the biggest differences show up:
- LSU: Ranked 14th, with a 60% chance of making the playoff and a 10% chance of winning the championship.
- Boise State: Ranked 25th, but has a 54% chance of reaching the playoff.
- Wake Forest: Ranked 16th, with a 45% playoff probability.
- Texas Tech: Ranked 15th, with a 34% playoff probability.
- Ohio State: Ranked 12th, with a 51% playoff probability.
LSU really stands out here. The Tigers are outside the committee's top 12, yet Kalshi gives them the same chance of winning the national championship as No. 1 Miami. Boise State is interesting for a different reason. Despite being ranked 25th, the Broncos have a potential conference championship path into the playoff.
That helps explain why traders are giving them a better chance of qualifying than several higher-ranked programs. It's a good reminder that the final playoff field isn't simply the committee's top 12 teams. Conference champions and automatic qualification rules can shake things up considerably.
Getting in and Winning it Are Two Different Things
One thing we found particularly interesting is how much the numbers change when you go from making the playoff to winning the championship. Indiana is a perfect example. The Hoosiers have a 90% chance of qualifying, but only a 20% chance of reaching the championship game and a 9% chance of winning it.
Utah is another. The undefeated Utes are ranked third, yet their playoff probability is 66%, with just a 14% chance of reaching the title game and a 3% chance of winning the championship. Those aren't necessarily contradictions. A team can have a favorable route into the playoff without being one of the strongest contenders once it gets there. That's why looking at all three markets tells us more than simply checking which team has the highest championship price.
The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take
We love college football rankings because they give everyone something to argue about. You can spend an entire afternoon debating whether Notre Dame should be fourth or 11th, or whether Kentucky deserves to be ahead of Texas. But that's also why we think Kalshi adds something worthwhile to the conversation. Instead of just arguing about which team deserves a certain ranking, we can look at how likely traders believe those teams are to actually make a playoff run.
Notre Dame is the biggest example. If the Irish really have the second-best chance of winning the national championship, as current market prices suggest, their No. 11 ranking starts to look pretty interesting. Kentucky and BYU tell the opposite story. Both have impressive records and strong rankings, but their playoff probabilities suggest plenty of work remains.
We wouldn't suggest treating Kalshi prices as a perfect college football forecast. Traders can be wrong, and one upset this weekend could change these numbers dramatically. Still, the comparison gives us a different way to look at the playoff race. The committee is telling us which teams have earned their spots today, while traders are trying to figure out which ones will still be standing when the season is over. With several weeks left before the playoff field is finalized, we'll find out which view holds up better.
