Kalshi Wash Trading Claims Place Scrutiny on $5 Billion Volume

Top prediction market platform Kalshi is under fire for wash trading claims. Per a recent report, almost one million trades have taken place in one of Kalshi’s ether perpetual-futures markets, with a large portion of the activity concentrated around the same $5,500 trading size.

Over $5 billion was generated by those specific transactions alone, with the unusual trading patterns fueling speculation about potential wash trading. Kalshi has disputed the claims, while the CFTC is reportedly reviewing the matter.

Kalshi’s $5 Billion Trading Pattern Draws Scrutiny

There is no denying trade volume of this size stands out, especially when it's composed of so many similar wagers. Those repetitive wagers take up almost a third of the $5 billion, prompting investigation and a Kalshi response.

This may not necessarily be an isolated incident, however, as independent reports prior to these findings also highlighted peculiar activity in Kalshi’s bitcoin and ether perpetual markets. In fact, CoinDesk reported Kalshi’s publicly displayed data revealed recurring fixed-dollar trade sizes.

These occurrences have raised red flags in the industry, with the phrase “wash trading” being thrown around. Wash trading is typically financial activity that is meant to appear legitimate, but may not include actual economic risk.

Kalshi Says Activity is Explained by Market Makers

Kalshi has disputed the claims of wash trading, stating it has procedures in place to prevent traders from trading with themselves. It also monitors for coordinated actions between different accounts on its trading platform.

If it's nothing suspicious, then what is it? Kalshi maintains it is simply market makers using automated tactics to keep orders at predetermined prices. With market price movement, the contract volume can change while the targeted price stays roughly the same.

CoinDesk has noted that the seemingly unusual patterns on Kalshi do align with a fixed-dollar algorithmic strategy. While the Kalshi wash trading claims are good for headlines, it seems there could be a very reasonable explanation for the abnormalities.

What Does Kalshi’s Volume Represent?

Since there’s likely nothing nefarious about this trading volume, the bigger picture is that Kalshi traders have been extremely busy.

It didn’t take a Kalshi wash trading allegation to know that, of course, as the prediction market industry as a whole is trending up in a big way. Prediction markets together have already generated $410 billion in overall volume in 2026, and there’s still a quarter of the year to go.

That massive surge has skeptics, but it also has major players dreaming big. Robinhood’s CEO was quoted as declaring this a trillion dollar industry back in February, while research firm Bernstein recently changed their long-term projection for prediction markets from $1 trillion to $10 trillion.

It remains to be seen if those ambitious numbers will be met, just as the jury is still out on what these reported wagers mean. However, recent volume and long-term projections do appear to be aligning.

The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take

There’s nothing wrong with proper verification and digging into something when it seems fishy.

Kalsh had an adequate response to the allegations, however, while their best answer to these claims is that business is booming. So far that very much seems to be the case, and legitimate volume like this only means recent projections aren’t as lofty as some may think.

Obviously if the allegations are true that’s a stain on Kalshi and the industry in general. It would cause everyone to rethink their position as far as where prediction markets are and where they’re going.

That said, prediction markets are rapidly growing and evolving. They’re not just platforms for wagering on sports; they’re integrating further into the financial industry. Heavy trading volume doesn’t have to be a negative, either. Assuming everything is above board, a little negative attention may simply signal Kalshi is doing something right.
