Polymarket Is Taking Prediction Markets Into Pokémon Cards

Polymarket is once again showing the capability of prediction markets. The platform has launched a new group of markets focused on Pokémon cards, allowing traders to take positions on whether the value of popular cards and sealed products will rise or fall.

It’s another sign that Polymarket is moving beyond the politics, sports and financial markets that helped turn prediction markets into a mainstream story.

Prediction markets appeal to the masses because of their options and this is just another indication.

Trading the Value of Pokémon Cards

  • Markets built around future Pokémon card prices
  • Contracts use ungraded card prices
  • Tracked by Collectr

The new markets are built around the future prices of individual Pokémon cards and sealed products. Instead of simply buying a card and hoping it appreciates, traders can now take a position on whether its value will move higher or lower.

The contracts use ungraded card prices tracked by Collectr, a collectibles pricing platform. That gives Polymarket a specific data source to determine how the markets move and eventually settle.

Some of the first markets include cards featuring major Pokémon such as Squirtle and Charizard.

The concept is simple as traders are essentially trying to predict where the collectible market is heading, with prices changing as people buy and sell contracts.

Polymarket already has hundreds of card related markets available, showing that the company is not treating Pokémon as an experiment. They’re committed to providing the best experience possible for collectors.

Why Pokémon Makes Sense

Pokémon cards might seem like a strange addition to a prediction market, but collectibles are gaining popularity.

The collectibles market has become increasingly financialized, particularly as rare cards can sell for enormous amounts and investors have started treating collectibles as alternative assets.

Pokémon is also heading into a major milestone year with the franchise approaching its 30th anniversary, creating another wave of interest around cards, sealed products and memorabilia.

The market for tokenized Pokémon cards has already seen significant activity this year, with onchain Pokémon card revenue surging. Prediction markets can capitalize on this momentum.

There is a large community of collectors who already spend significant amounts of time tracking prices, releases and demand. Polymarket is essentially giving those people another way to express their opinions.

Polymarket Keeps Expanding

The Pokémon launch fits into a much larger strategy for Polymarket. The company has steadily expanded the categories available on its platform, moving well beyond the political markets that initially made it famous.

Traders can now find markets connected to sports, finance, crypto, technology, entertainment and culture. Their expansion is important because the more interest the company sparks, the more revenue they will generate.

Pokémon is interesting because it combines a massive global fan base with a market where prices can change quickly based on demand. The company is essentially betting that people who already follow collectibles will be willing to put money behind their predictions.

This may not be the case, but it’s worth a shot for the company.

The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take

Pokémon markets are another example of how broad the prediction market industry is becoming. A few years ago, the concept was largely associated with elections and political outcomes. Now traders can trade on virtually anything.

The additional markets may never stop coming as Polymarket grows. More markets creates increased users, which gives Polymarket a higher valuation.

Prediction markets needs enough different categories to attract different types of users and give traders a reason to keep coming back.Pokémon may be niche, but it could be a surprisingly strong addition.

If Pokémon cards can become tradable prediction markets, there is not much left that cannot potentially be turned into an event contract.
