Ronald Acuña Jr. Makes MLB History With Kalshi Deal

Ronald Acuña Jr. probably hoped his final appearance of the season would make headlines for something other than a disappointing playoff exit. Instead, the Atlanta Braves star is making history off the field, becoming the first MLB player to sign an individual partnership with prediction-market platform Kalshi.

The announcement came during a rough week for Atlanta. The Los Angeles Dodgers eliminated the Braves from the National League Division Series, while Acuña struggled to deliver the postseason performance fans expected.

A Historic Deal at an Awkward Time

Kalshi introduced its partnership with Acuña through a commercial that aired Wednesday night during Game 4 of Atlanta's series against Los Angeles. The Dodgers won 4-1, ending the Braves' season in four games. The timing wasn't exactly ideal for Acuña. Fans had already expressed their frustration with the former National League MVP, including booing him during the series.

After the loss, Acuña acknowledged how difficult the experience had been. He also reiterated his desire to remain with Atlanta, although his long-term future with the organization remains uncertain. The partnership itself is a significant milestone. No active MLB player had previously signed an individual endorsement agreement with a prediction market exchange.

Kalshi is Building a Baseball Presence

Acuña's deal isn't Kalshi's first connection to Major League Baseball. The company has spent the past several months building relationships with teams while expanding its presence across professional sports.

Kalshi already has partnerships with five MLB franchises:

  • Atlanta Braves
  • Boston Red Sox
  • Los Angeles Dodgers
  • San Diego Padres
  • San Francisco Giants

The company is also reportedly discussing a potential league-wide agreement with MLB. Nothing has been finalized, but the conversations show how aggressively Kalshi is pursuing baseball partnerships.

Other prediction market companies have entered the sport as well. The New York Yankees partnered with Polymarket, while the New York Mets reached an agreement with Novig. For fans, these partnerships mean prediction market advertising is becoming increasingly difficult to miss around baseball.

Athletes Are Becoming Part of the Strategy

While Acuña is the first MLB player to partner with Kalshi, he's joining a growing list of professional athletes working with prediction market platforms. Golfer Bryson DeChambeau, NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and soccer superstar Lionel Messi have all formed partnerships with Kalshi. Signing recognizable athletes gives these companies something traditional advertising cannot always deliver: a direct connection with passionate sports fans.

However, baseball presents some unique challenges. MLB has a long history of concerns about player involvement in sports-related financial activity, making individual endorsements particularly sensitive. Kalshi also continues to face legal challenges from states that dispute its authority to offer sports event contracts under federal regulation.

The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take

We think Acuña's partnership says more about Kalshi's ambitions than the unfortunate timing of the announcement. The company isn't simply trying to put its name inside stadiums anymore. It wants recognizable athletes representing its platform. Still, baseball is an interesting place to push those boundaries.

Player endorsements could raise questions about how leagues protect competitive integrity while allowing prediction market companies to become commercial partners. For Kalshi, landing Acuña is another major step into mainstream sports. For MLB, it's another sign that prediction markets are becoming harder to separate from the business of professional baseball.
