Traders Taking Action on LeBron James' Next Team

LeBron James officially will not be returning to the Los Angeles Lakers next season, and the NBA's biggest free agency storyline is now underway. While a decision could come at any moment, James has no shortage of suitors, which could make this process take longer than many fans expected.

Prediction markets have quickly become one of the most interesting ways to follow major sports news, and traders are already putting millions of dollars behind where they believe James will play next. Both Kalshi and Polymarket have active markets on his next team, with recent trading activity pointing toward a familiar destination.

Could the King be headed back to where it all began?

LeBron James Next Team Odds

Kalshi's market on James' next team has generated nearly $49 million in trading volume, making it one of the platform's most active sports markets. The current favorite is the Cleveland Cavaliers, a team that has surged to the top of the board after significant movement over the past several days.

Cleveland now holds a 49% chance of landing James, while the Golden State Warriors have fallen to second at 15%. Early in the process, Golden State appeared to be the preferred destination, especially after reports that James had interest in teaming up with Steph Curry before retiring.

The two stars developed strong chemistry while playing together for Team USA at the Olympics, fueling speculation that James wanted one final championship run alongside Curry. However, that possibility has become far less likely based on recent prediction market movement.

Much of the shift came after trade discussions involving Anthony Davis stalled. James reportedly viewed Golden State as a realistic landing spot if the Warriors could acquire Davis from Washington, but the Wizards have shown little interest in moving the veteran big man. Once that became clear, traders quickly began buying shares of Cleveland.

The market has changed dramatically in a short period of time. Cleveland was trading as low as 12.7% earlier in the process but has since climbed to nearly half of the entire market. Meanwhile, Golden State reached 49% at one point before experiencing a steep decline.

The Philadelphia 76ers have also emerged as a legitimate contender. Following their acquisition of Jaylen Brown, Philadelphia appears positioned to compete for an Eastern Conference title, and traders have taken notice.

The 76ers currently sit at 14%, gaining four percentage points over the past 24 hours. A $10 trade on Cleveland would currently return just over $20 if James signs with the Cavaliers, while the same investment on Philadelphia offers a much larger payout.

Golden State still cannot be completely ruled out. If the Warriors somehow find a way to reshape their roster and make another aggressive move, they could jump back into the race. A $10 trade on Golden State would return more than $59, reflecting both the higher risk and larger potential reward.

The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take

James still has plenty of options, which should surprise no one. According to his agent, Rich Paul, 28 teams initially reached out to express interest. That list has reportedly been narrowed to five serious contenders: the Cavaliers, Warriors, 76ers, Timberwolves, and Heat. Denver also generated speculation early in the process, but that possibility appears to have faded.

If prediction markets are any indication, Cleveland has all the momentum.

Our prediction is that James finishes his career with the Cavaliers. While Cleveland may not offer the clearest path to another NBA championship, the storybook ending is hard to ignore. Returning home for a third stint with the franchise where he became a superstar would be a fitting final chapter for one of the greatest players in NBA history.

Prediction markets are signaling that outcome, and unless another contender makes a major move in the coming days, Cleveland appears to be the team to beat.
