Vegas Takes Game 1 of Stanley Cup and Traders React Heavily

Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals is in the books, and the Vegas Golden Knights earned the road victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Over three-quarters of Stanley Cup winners have taken Game 1 of the series, and the win has caused a significant shift in favor of Vegas on Kalshi.

The Golden Knights opened as the underdog to win the series, but traders are now expecting Vegas to hoist their second Stanley Cup.

Updated Kalshi Trading

Game 1 of the Stanley Cup took place on June 2nd, and at 5:00 PM EST on Kalshi, the Hurricanes held a 57.2% chance to win the title. Carolina was the top seed in the Eastern Conference, finishing the regular season with 113 points.

However, the Hurricanes dropped the opening game of the series 5-4, and their championship likelihood plummeted to 41%. If they manage to even the series in Game 2, that number will likely rise back to around 50%.

The value is on the Golden Knights right now, given the rich history of Stanley Cup champions prevailing in Game 1. Vegas's chance of winning the series sits at 59%, up from 43% before the opener.

If you believe the Golden Knights can close out the series in six games or fewer, a $10 wager would pay out $23. If their series against Colorado proved anything, it's that they can beat elite teams and they don't need seven games to do it.

Vegas swept Colorado in the Western Conference Finals, and the Avalanche were widely regarded as the best team in hockey all season long.

What to Watch for in Game 2

The Hurricanes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on the road in Game 1, but they failed to hold it. Vegas scored three unanswered goals before Carolina tied the game at the end of the third period.

The Golden Knights stayed resilient and scored right out of the locker room in the final period. The Hurricanes tied the score at the 11:19 mark before Tomas Hertl ended Carolina's Game 1 hopes with a dagger in the final four minutes.

The Golden Knights have been the definition of resilient this season, especially in the playoffs. They have jumped on opponents early, but they've also been highly successful playing from behind.

That's a dangerous combination because they're comfortable in any arena and in any game situation. I expect Game 2 to look very similar to Game 1, because the box score was essentially even.

Vegas didn't outplay Carolina statistically, but they were just a step quicker when it mattered. Jack Eichel has led the team with big goals and timely assists, and Mitch Marner has also been a fantastic addition.

Marner could never win the Stanley Cup in Toronto, but he's off to a great start with the Golden Knights. I expect a stronger effort from Carolina because they can't afford to go down 2-0 in the series, but Vegas may simply be too strong.

The Trade Handle Prediction Markets Take

When you look at the Game 2 market, the splits make sense. The Hurricanes carry a 59% chance of winning because they're at home and they should play with desperation.

I think back to the Avalanche series for Vegas, which this one could resemble. Colorado was favored in nearly every game, but the Golden Knights always found a way to come out on top.

The Golden Knights are absolutely worth trading in Game 2 because of their proven ability to win in hostile environments. A $10 trade on Vegas in Game 2 pays $25.
